What is a Pillow?

  1. A cloth case, stuffed with something soft, such as down, feathers, or foam rubber, used to cushion the head, especially during sleep.
  2. A decorative cushion.
  3. The pad on which bobbin lace is made.
Few items you'll purchase require as much care and thought as a pillow. After all, your head and neck will be keeping close company with it for many moons. One thing to consider is your sleeping position. Do you sleep on your back, your side or your stomach? There is a pillow firmness just right for each position.

Which pillow suits your style?

A pillow should support your head and neck comfortably, so you can get a good night's sleep. It should be able to mold itself to your unique contours and sleep position, alleviating any pressure points.

Though we all toss and turn to some degree throughout the night, most people favor a definite sleep position - and that's the one they're in when they fall asleep. This preferred position determines which pillow firmness will deliver the best support.

Back sleepers - you need a pillow that will support the natural curvature of your upper spine, providing support under your head, neck and shoulders. A pillow with medium firmness would probably be your best choice.

Side sleepers - your pillow should support your head and neck so that your spine maintains a straight and horizontal line. A firm pillow would be best for you.

Stomach sleepers - your pillow should be relatively flat so your head and neck aren't turned unnaturally to either side. A soft pillow would likely be the best way to go.

A few fun pillow facts.

• The Chinese invented silk pillows.
• The ancient Egyptians actually slept on pillows of stone.
• Back in the day, some pillows were filled with straw instead of feathers or down.
• The Industrial Revolution brought about the mass production of pillows (among other things).

                                  Test your pillow for support.

For Down and Feather Pillows: Lay your fluffed pillow on a flat hard surface. Fold your pillow in half and squeeze out all the air. A pillow with support will spring back open to its original form. If your pillow does not spring back then you need a new pillow that will support your head and neck.

For Latex, Memory Foam, or Fiber Fill Pillows: Fluff and fold as above. Place a 10 ounce weight on the folded pillow (a medium size sneaker will do). If the pillow has proper support it will throw the weight and unfold itself. A pillow without support will remain folded.

Sleeping with the right pillow can help prevent a lot of unnecessary tossing and turning, not to mention sore shoulders and an achy neck in the morning.

H
ere are some tips for picking out the right pillow

  • Pillows should be firm and spring back into shape when you fold them in half. ·
  • Choose a manageable size. A pillow that's too big may cause abnormal neck flexing and lead to muscle spasms. ·
  • If you have a back problem, consider a cervical (neck) pillow that is contoured to your neck and gives the neck support without flexing it too much.

Snoring occurs when the muscles in the throat vibrate.  By elevating the head, the vibration may be lessened or stopped.

Snoring can be the number one cause of daytime drowsiness and fatigue. It is essential for the body to sleep soundly. Snoring disturbs the normal sleep patterns and habits, and can lead to medical problems if it is severe. Snoring is caused by an obstruction of the normal flow of air while sleeping. There are many causes for an air movement obstruction, including a mispositioned jaw, gathering of fat and tissue around the throat, nasal passage obstructions and a weakness in the throat. Snoring not only affects the person who snores, but also has an effect on sleep partners. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that they snore. It is usually pointed out by another person who has been in the same area when the person has been sleeping. Snoring may be the sign that there are other medical problems, such as sleep apnea. If snoring is persistent, it is highly recommended to seek treatment, even if it is a slight change, such as the use of a specialty pillow.

The entire goal of your pillow, no matter what it's made out of should be to align your spine, head and neck.

If you sleep on your side (like most people do), then you need something to support your head and neck correctly while you sleep so you wake up feeling refreshed and energized. You'll normally want to look for a medium density pillow in this event to get the proper height and support.

If you sleep on your stomach however, you don't want to use too high of a pillow, or chances are your spine will be forced into very unnatural positions while you sleep and you'll end up with a major backache and probably a neck ache. You'll want to go for a softer thinner type of pillow.

If you sleep on your back then you'll probably want to consider a medium or thinner pillow. It really depends on your body build as to what is the proper height. Sleep experts usually recommend adding an additional pillow underneath your knees when you sleep on your back to further help align your spine.

If you tend to sleep in all of these positions, the best option for you might be an all-around type pillow. This means it's not too dense or high for most people and provides proper support for the average build in all positions. This may be a good place to start when buying a luxury pillow if you're not absolutely a hundred percent positive that you'll like the firmer, denser, higher pillows.

A side note here, invest in several pillow protectors. You just stuff your pillow inside it, zip it up and then put the pillow case over the whole thing. Pillow protectors add an extra layer to keep your pillows from absorbing dirt and oil and perspiration. An inexpensive way to protect your investment.

In the late 1990’s, latex allergies became a topic of concern for many people.

Much has been publicized about anaphylactic shock, an allergic reaction that affects a very small portion of the public exposed to a protein found in natural rubber latex. These issues can be confusing and it is important to become aware as we educate ourselves regarding the facts of latex.

The History of Latex

Latex has been an integral part of our life since the 1920’s. Latex is present in many consumer products we use every day, such as the paint on our walls, the tires we ride on, the balls and balloons our children play with and, yes, the mattresses and pillows on which we lay. The word “latex” literally means polymers suspended in water. These polymers take many forms, most of which are synthetic polymers. Synthetic polymers do not stimulate an allergic reaction.  It is only proteins contained in natural rubber latex that can cause a reaction.  There have been over 250 individual proteins found in natural rubber sap. Some of these proteins can produce allergic reactions, most of which take the form of simple skin rashes, in a very small number of people.  Since the late 1980’s, the use of natural latex has grown dramatically. This growth is especially visible in the healthcare industry due to latex’s effectiveness as a disease-protecting device. Natural latex gloves are an example of these protective devices. This increase in usage is posing a problem to workers in the health care field whose risk increased due to higher direct skin exposure to the proteins found in natural latex. These products are made using a dipped vulcanization process, which is different from the process we use. These medical products are often produced in third world countries that do not have strict GMP manufacturing codes used in the United States.

Making the Difference

At Latex Foam International and its mattress division, Latex International, we take action to prevent this potential allergic reaction from occurring. Any products intended for direct skin contact, such as cosmetic sponge applicators, do not contain natural rubber latex. Any non-skin contact products, such as mattresses and pillows, that may contain some natural rubber latex, undergo a five stage washing process. Unlike dipped products, the openness of the latex foam’s cells allows for thorough washing. In addition, natural rubber proteins are water-soluble. Latex International’s unique five-step washing process removes the vast majority of proteins while enhancing the quality of the overall product.

Put to the Test

The FDA monitors complaints for allergic reactions to natural rubber latex. To our knowledge, there has never been a single complaint over our past 28 years of experience stemming from the natural rubber found in mattresses and pillows.

Our products have been tested by outside facilities and are shown to be inherently hypoallergenic for sufferers of mold, mildew or bacterial allergies. In addition, our mattress and pillows are resistant to dust mites and are naturally resistant to mold and mildew which are contributors to asthma and pulmonary function allergies.

In short, latex allergies are concerning. Fortunately, these allergies can be prevented through proper formulation and processing. No one can say that there will never be a reaction to our products, but to date there has never been a reported problem. We must recognize the long, long track record of safety with latex. We paint our walls, we wear it in our clothes, we use it in our businesses and most importantly, we get the best night’s sleep because of latex.  Please note, if you have a documented or known allergic reaction to latex, Latex Foam International and Latex International do not recommend that you purchase any products containing natural latex, especially if direct skin contact is expected. This would include clothing, condoms, mattresses, and pillows along with other latex products.

Having a good night's sleep is very important for most people, since it allows them to recuperate after a long day, and it helps them prepare for the next one. Some people cannot sleep because of the noise, others because of worries, while others cannot sleep simply because they do not have an adequate pillow. Fortunately, it is possible to solve easily an issue such as finding the appropriate therapeutic pillow.
